Have you ever noticed that medication is almost always crazy expensive? I’ve been aware of how expensive drugs are for a while, but I really got stung today when took my dog to the vet for an ear infection.
It turns out that not only does he have issues with his ears, but he also has allergies that are causing him to get a bit itchy. By the time we left the vet I was up for a little over $100.
Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of options to save money when it comes to pets, but there are at least 3 good ways to save money on prescription medication when it comes to you and your family.
Tip #1: Ask for Generic
Most generic drugs do exactly the same thing a branded drug does, except they cost much less.
Be up front with your doctor and ask for a generic prescription instead of a branded one. Most branded medicines have a generic alternative which your doctor won’t mind prescribing unless there are no alternatives.
Generic drugs are pretty much never advertised, so they don’t need to pass on any costs to the consumer.
More often than not Generic drugs tend not to be trademarked, so this means there are even more savings that the company is able to pass on to you.
I personally don’t know why people should have to pay more for one type of medicine versus another – particularly when they are almost the exact same thing.
Tip #2: Search for the Cheapest Pharmacy
Don’t settle for the closest pharmacy in your area. Some pharmacies offer really great discounts. I actually have one that is on my way home from work which offers most medication at about 15 to 20% less than the standard price.
I know that normally shopping online is a great way to save money, but I personally wouldn’t even consider it. I know that some of the prices are significantly cheaper, but there are also big risks involved in purchasing medication from other countries and there may even be laws preventing you from importing it. Remember – not all countries have the same safety standards, so you might end up doing yourself some real damage.
Tip #3: Sign up for a prescription discount card
Another great way to save money is to sign up for discount card with your local pharmacy. Many of the larger chains offer discounts cards, and if you are having to buy medication regularly, this should enable you to save even more money.
