Anyone who knows me knows that I am not the most handy person on the planet, in fact, I’m pretty much useless when it comes to traditional “manly/macho” type things. I don’t have a shed with lots of power tools, I haven’t got a clue how to fix a broken car engine and I can pretty much guarantee that if you can think of some sort of DIY activity – then I’m confident that I wouldn’t know how to do that either.
Now that you all know how useless I am when it comes to being a home fix it man, I can tell you that all is not lost. You see despite being pretty terrible when it comes to being handy, I am perfectly capable of watching videos of other (more handy) people explaining how to go about fixing or building things.
It’s amazing just how many YouTube videos there are of people fixing things like doors, tables or even doing things like changing light bulbs, car tyres, car oil and many more things. Most of the time there will be someone who has created a video tutorial and shared it online to help enable others (like me) to be able to complete these simple DIY jobs themselves.
So that’s what I do now. Whenever there is a problem that needs fixing around the house, I jump online and see if there is a video explanation of how to go about fixing whatever it is I am looking to fix. I would say that I have about a 100% strike rate at finding a video that is of some use to me, however the success rate of actually following the video, or comprehending it to a point of me being comfortable to try something myself, is not quite 100%.
As an example, the first time I needed to change a tap washer I had almost no idea what I was doing – I mean I had a general idea, in that I knew what the problem was, but I didn’t really know how to go about fixing it. So I watched a video and then successfully changed the washer without any major concerns.
Although it doesn’t always go so smoothly, like the recent lawn mower issues that I had. I ended up realizing that this was probably going to be above my level of expertise, and so I contacted a local mower man who fixed the whole thing for a small fee.
The main point that I want to make here is that I can now save money by attempting things that I would never have attempted previously. This is all thanks to the knowledge of someone who has done the activity before and has shared their knowledge and expertise with anyone who goes searching for it online. Traditionally I would have most likely phoned a repair person to fix something, whereas now I can take on a task and often get the right result without having to spend a dime.
