American retailers earn about a third of their total annual revenue during the months of November and December. Because of this influx of profit, the stores are able to add extra staff, extend their hours and send out more packages. They need extra help, and they will pay for it.
If your holiday budget is tight this year, fear no more. This is a great year to find a seasonal job as a report recently predicted that more than 800,000 seasonal workers can find temporary jobs this year, the highest number since 1999. By working at these stores, you can either use the money you make to purchase presents for your family without dipping into the budget, or save it!
Where to Work Over the Holidays
The most obvious choice would be to find a job in a department store. This holiday season alone, Wal-Mart plans to hire 60,000 extra workers; and the company that owns Macy’s and Bloomingdales will hire 86,000. However, don’t forget about smaller stores and boutiques, they will also be looking for help. A good plan is to get hired at a store that you love and take advantage of the employee discount!
Another idea to try, that can also help you stave off those dreaded holiday pounds, would be the shipping companies. December is their busiest month, so as long as you can perform manual labor, such as lifting 60 lbs, and pass a drug test, then you are all set! UPS and FedEx plan to hire 145,000 seasonal workers this year and according to the UPS website, if you work 3.5-4 hours each weekday, you can bring home $140-$170 each week. That’s a lot of stocking stuffers.
If you’re already a crafty person and make your own holiday decorations, why not be self-employed and sell those crafts online and at holiday festivals? Most people don’t have the skill, time, or patience to create their own handmade decorations, but they are willing to pay for them.
If you already have experience in the food industry, finding work at a catering company is smart over the holidays. Caterers need extra help to deal with all of the extra office parties and other holiday parties. The hours are usually a bit later, so it may be easier to do this job after your day-job. If you’re not sure where to start, just look on Yelp or online and start calling! Even if you don’t get the job now, it may be a nice way to make a little extra all year-round.
The holiday season is a great time to make a little extra money, instead of just spending it all. Also, you may appreciate your money more if you are working an extra job and spend your money more carefully. I would recommend calling and just walking in to apply, but don’t delay, companies are hiring now so that they’re prepared for the holiday rush. Get out there!
