Yes, you can make money selling on EBay. While technically speaking, selling on EBay is not a way to save money, it does add to the bottom line of your budget, which has the same effect as saving money.
People all over the world bring in extra cash, supplement their income and even make full time livings selling on EBay. I sold on EBay for a number of years and became an EBay Power Seller in the process. I made good profits and would still be an EBay seller, except that I was not suited for dealing with the retail public.
If you are going to sell on EBay you have to keep in mind that you are going to be dealing with a bargain hunting public that is often unsophisticated. This type of client can be very demanding and time-consuming. If the thought of dealing with this type of client does not deter you, the world of EBay selling could be for you.
You Can Make Money Selling on EBay
The best way to dip your toe into the EBay water, and to make a few extra bucks, is to sell the things that you have around that you neither need nor use.
Take the Christmas and birthday presents that you have accumulated over the years, that are still new and in their boxes, and list them for sale. New items generally sell better than used, as do brand name goods.
That Black and Decker power tool, for example, will sell much more easily than will a generic drill.
Scour your home and your office. If you have items that you have not used in more than six months or a year, consider listing them for sale. You will be surprised at just how quickly your pile of potential sale items will build.
My personal EBay experience is that clothes do not sell well unless they are designer labels, nearly new and deeply discounted. I did sell several thousands of dollars’ worth of books on both EBay and Amazon. Don’t bother trying to sell used paperback fiction though. The pennies you might get for these will not cover your shipping and related expenses.
Once you have your potential sale items, search for similar items already for sale and sold on EBay. See how much these items sold for. This way you can see if the amount of potential cash you could receive for the sale of your good is enough to motivate you to go to the effort of listing that item.
Check Out EBay Sales University
Your next step will be to get an EBay account and to actually list your things. There are literally thousands of articles on the internet that will give you the basics of EBay sales. EBay even has it’s own Sales University.
I want to talk about three areas of your listing that I think are absolutely critical to the maximization of your EBay revenue, keywords, the photograph and the timing of your listing.
Just like any website, your EBay listing has to be seen. To get the listing seen you will have to use good search engine optimization strategies in your listing. In EBay, this means keywords. You must use keywords in your listing, and most importantly, in your titles that will help potential buyers find you.
Think about what keywords you would use to search for the item you are selling. Check those keywords on EBay. If you find items similar to those you want to sell, then you have good keywords. If not, then keep trying to find keywords that will get your EBay listings exposure.
You Must Have a Good Photograph
The photograph of your item is of critical importance. It must be well lit, in focus and show off your item in in a good way. If you don’t have a photograph of your item, don’t even bother to post the listing! A poor quality photograph or no photograph at all will greatly limit the revenue you can bring in from your sale.
One of the most frequent and costly mistakes I saw on EBay was ending of listings at the wrong time. Most sales activity on EBay listings takes place in the last hour of those listings. If your listing ends in the middle of the night, for example, it will be seen by very few people and the sales price will be low. You can find great EBay bargains on listings that end at 3 AM. Don’t let yours be one of those bargain basement listings.
The Best Time Schedule Your Listing
Schedule your sale to end when the greatest number of people are using EBay. Typically this is between 6 and 10 PM Eastern time. Also, Sunday is the best day to end your listing. It is worth any extra charge that EBay levies to end your listings at these times.
Lots and lots of people do make money selling on EBay. You can too. Getting rid of unused and unwanted items in your household is a great way to start. You can do this, start making some extra money and see if EBay selling might just be a good revenue generator for you.
