So my wife and I have just had Air conditioning installed in our house. It’s something that I have avoided doing because I know that air conditioning costs a lot of money to buy, install and run. Fortunately I didn’t have to pay for the initial purchase or the install (our new landlord did that), but I will have to cover the on going running costs of the unit.
One of the key things I have learned is that you need to make sure you set the temperature correctly – by correctly I mean don’t set it too low. I live in Australia, and it gets quite hot here so setting the air conditioning unit to something like 23 degrees can still make it nice and cool inside your house, without having to get the air conditioning unit to bust a gut.
The other thing my wife and I have been discussing is exactly when we want to have the air conditioning unit turned on. At first I was thinking I wanted it on pretty much whenever I was getting sweaty, but we ended up agreeing that it should only be used when the temperature got into the mid 30’s, that way we are only really spending money on cooling the house when we really need it.
It’s not cheap either. The current system will cost us about $1.50 an hour to run if we have it going on high. In our new house, which is about to start construction shortly, it will cost us even more ($3 an hour) as it’s a bigger system. So making sure we only turn it on when we really require it will save us a heap of money.
I know some people that have their air conditioning going almost 24×7. If their systems cost as much as our current one, then that means they are spending a little over $1,000 a month of cooling their home. That’s an extraordinary amount of money, and way more than I would be happy paying.
Do you have air conditioning? How much does it cost you to run? Do you have any advice to keep the running costs down?
