Unless you are bald, getting your hair cut is something that most people have to deal with every couple of months or so. One thing that I have started to realize lately is that getting your hair cut can be quite an expensive exercise.
My wife and I normally go to our local hair salon to get our haircuts. It’s very close to where we live, so it’s very convenient, plus the people are all very friendly and do a great job at cutting hair. However one thing that has been starting to annoy me is the constant price increases that seem to happen every 6 months of so.
To put things into perspective – when I first started going to this hairdresser I was spending $15 for a cut and shampoo of my hair, my wife was closer to $50. my wife has significantly more hair than me, and she also gets a lot more done, so the extra price is to be expected.
The last time we went to the same salon it cost me $30 and my wife $75! Needless to say, we are now looking for alternatives as paying that kind of money almost feels like extortion. The last time I was there I asked the owner why the prices had risen so sharply and in such a short period of time, she said that they were remodeling and that we could expect a much nicer atmosphere whist we got our haircuts…
I don’t give two hoots about the ambiance of the hair salon, I just want a haircut that isn’t going to send me broke. So now I am on the hunt for the best way for me to save money on my hair. Here is what i have come up with.
1 – Cut your own hair
Many people buy a pair of clippers and just run them over their head once a week. Your first haircut will be expensive as you will need to buy the equipment, but over the long run this is probably the cheapest method of having a haircut. Although it will mean that you aren’t going to have too many different ways to style your hair.
If you trust your partner you could ask them to cut your hair. I know that the woman who used to live behind us did that for her husband. She ended up enjoying it so much she studied to be a professional hairdresser and then started running her own hair salon from home.
2 – Shop around for the best deal
Let’s say that you don’t trust your partner to cut your hair and you don’t like the idea of the clippers. Your next best bet is to shop around for a hairdresser. Some of the cheapest that you will find are often home salons as they do not have to pay the shopfront rental fees that other retailers have to pay.
3 – Get your hair cut really short
I normally try to get my hair cut really short so that I don’t have to get another haircut for as long as a period as possible. If you are big on your looks though, this might not be for you as there really isn’t much you can do with your hair when it’s half an inch off your head.
4 – Let your hair grow
The most obvious way to avoid having hair cuts is to let your hair grow. You never know, you might look great with long hair down your back.
